What’s you IG? Launched just 5 years ago in 2010, Instagram is currently one of the fastest growing social networks with 300 million active monthly users.  It has quickly turned into a cultural phenomenon, and due to its rise to prominence, brands and individuals alike are trying to figure out how to get the most out of it.  There is always a need for a few fresh ideas, and a few Instagram tips.

Instagram is part of the fast moving internet.  The business model still has not been totally figured out, with new features being added all of the time.  It is almost like the wild wild west, and people are constantly figuring out new and creative ways to use the site.

Based on the current landscape, here are a few useful instagram tips.

Instagram tips and tricks:

Post only your best pictures

You want to stand out, don’t you?  Then only post your best pictures.  You might think that you have taken a great picture, but take a step back, and look at it from your follower’s perspective, and think about how many other pictures look just like yours on Instagram already.  Strive to be unqiue, and creative.

Be Square

When you are composing your pictures, think square.  Don’t get caught taking pictures with the interesting subjects on the ends.  Focus on the middle of your frame, or set your phone to take square photos.

Post on a regular basis

The more you post, the more opportunities you have to put something out there that really connects with someone.  It is a good idea to post 3-5 times a day with your most interesting stuff.  Your followers will appreciate good content spread through out the day for their entertainment.

Don’t post too much

Yeah, I know.  I said post on a regular basis, but don’t over do it.  No one wants their whole feed filled up with similar images from the same person all day long.  Spread your posts out, and give other people a chance to shine.

Keep your posts short

We have limited attention spans online, and in life in general.  Make it punchy, and get to the point.  Too much reading, and people will move on.  Try to be witty and grab attention with your unique perspective.

Cool it with the selfies

The world is selfie obsessed.  Look at me. Look at me.  Turn that camera around and show us some of the world you live in.  Are you in a cool gallery?  Take some snaps.  You can’t keep taking pictures of the same thing over, and over, and over again. #NoMoreSelfies

Put captions of your pictures

Captions, and titles help you break through all of the clutter on Instagram.  How many Starbuck’s drinks can you really look at in one day?  Use words to make your posts more intriguing, and compelling.  Be creative, show a little wit, and make it entertaining.  It can be the difference between getting a like, or not.

Post videos

Videos are a great way to mix it up, stand out, and they simply are just cool!

Comment, Like, and Follow

Instagram is all about interactions.  It is a social site after all.  So be social!  Don’t just post your pictures.  Interact.  Comment on other people’s posts.  Respond to comments on your posts.  Like other people’s pictures, and follow as many people that interest you.  If someone follows you, check out their profile.  Maybe you can follow them back.  All of these social activities bring attention to your profile, and what you have to offer.

Use relevant hashtags

People tend to use more hashtags on Instagram, but don’t go crazy with it.  Figure out what hashtags are relevant to your audience, and make sure to use them when they are appropriate.  Hashtags are just another way to help people find your great content.  You are creating great content, right?

Use filters

Use filters to add some pop to your pictures.  Sometimes, filters can make an average image great, but don’t think that they can always perform magic.  Some popular filters to check out are Low-Fi, Valencia, and X-Pro II.
